Plastic to Fuel - Sustainable Economic Opportunity?

These past few years the world has begun to understand the profound challenges and damages caused by the proliferation of plastic and plastic pollution. Last year my family foundation, Making A Mark , invested in a research project led by UNCW and The Plastic Ocean Project . The goal was to test the by-products from the heating of plastics back to re-usable, high value fuel products such as kerosene, diesel and naptha. The tests were very positive and reassuring.

But more importantly, it gave us great hope that there is real viability and sustainable economic opportunity in the systems to convert low value plastic waste into high value fuels. You see, coming from 33 years in the business world, it is clear to me that the only way you can hope to gain true global adoption , is to insure there is commercial economic opportunity that can demonstrate real return on investment. The attached white-paper from Renewlogy and the Plastic Ocean Project shows that with today’s “generation 1” reactors, we can realize less than a 3 year payback in systems that can forever remove plastics from our environment and return them to their original fuel forms that are needed for commercial use everywhere around the world. And with broad deployments and R&D, we should easily expect next generation systems to be much more efficient and cost effective.

This means to me that today small countries, states, municipalities, etc can invest in systems to control the plastic deluge and remove forever single use plastics that make up 55% of todays plastic waste. Enjoy reading….
